Florence in jazz
For the first two weeks of September, music moves out of the venues and around Florence, after sunset.
The Florence Jazz Festival doesn't have a fixed stage: it changes location every night, across squares, villas and historic courtyards. And even though the name says jazz, the programme stretches into reggae, electronic music and singer-songwriters.
Among the most recurring stops are the gardens of Villa Bardini, looking out over the city, Conventino in Oltrarno for a quieter atmosphere, and Forte Belvedere, higher up above Florence. On the final evenings, the festival gathers towards Porta Romana, where the bigger concerts take place.
From the campsite, you can reach the centre by public bus or train, and from there many locations are within walking distance, crossing the Arno and passing through quieter neighbourhoods. There's no need to follow the whole programme: just pick a concert, an area to explore, and leave some time in between. That's usually where you catch Florence at its most real.
