Some days begin surrounded by greenery and end under the lights of a theatre.
From hu Firenze Certosa camping in town, heading into the city centre means changing pace for a while: leaving open spaces behind and stepping into the streets, squares and stories of Florence.
One of those stories remained silent for a long time. Today, the Florence National Theatre has come back to life just a short walk from Piazza della Signoria.

A place with many lives
The Florence National Theatre hasn’t always been a theatre.
The building’s origins date back to the 14th century and, over the centuries, it has taken on many different identities. It was once a reformatory, later a theatre, a place linked to some of the earliest performances of Stenterello, Florence’s traditional comic character, and, during the 20th century, also a cinema.
After more than forty years of closure, the theatre has reopened following a major restoration project.
Today, it still has the intimate character of a traditional Italian theatre, with its horseshoe-shaped auditorium and a number of historic details brought back to light.
Around them, however, the present has found plenty of room too

When history meets new ways of storytelling
Bringing the Florence National Theatre back to life wasn’t simply about restoring an old building.
The project introduced video mapping, immersive sound systems and large LED surfaces that extend the performance beyond the stage and bring the audience closer to the action.
Alongside live music and the tradition of opera, there is now space for new ways of telling the stories of Florence and its surroundings.
You might find yourself immersed in the city’s stories and characters, hear opera in a more immediate and contemporary setting, or explore experiences where images, sounds and flavours become part of the same narrative.
Different experiences, all built around the same idea: not simply watching what happens on stage, but feeling part of it.
